Right on cue… the anti-hunters are outraged and loud. But do they know what the hell they’re talking about?
The usual suspects — Piers Morgan for one — went straight for the hyperbole in his default outrage.
It must be exhausting to be so worked up about something you know so little about.
Let’s begin with the most honest statement in the article the one in which he admits his bias:
I’ve never understood trophy hunting, nor the delight those who partake in it feel about what they do.
To gleefully celebrate slaying such wonderful animals in their natural habitat, knowing they are all facing possible extinction, seems so unutterably snivelling and cowardly.
Together with the introduction of the article where he makes elephants out to be more human than people (look up anthropomorphism some time, Piers), his remaining reactions are predictable.
Praise of Obama for the ‘tough stance’ he took in previous legislation, and condemnation of Trump’s administration was sure to follow. With a few gratuitous hunting photos thrown in — because, why not? He is basing his entire argument on emotion, not logic anyway.
Maybe while you’ve got that dictionary out, you could look up ’emotional appeal’. The very ’emotional appeal’ that was employed when you tried to dismiss the economic benefits and conservation argument because “Cecil the Lion” was a ‘beloved’ star tourist attraction.
The hyperbole became a full-throated scream when he tried to compare Trump to… Mugabe???
Damn, Piers, dial it down a notch. Try some zen gardening, or whatever it is you soy-eaters do to relax. Or, because none of that is working, maybe join a gun club. It might surprise you.
Where were we?
Right. The policy.
The move would reverse a policy implemented by the Republican president’s Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service disclosed at a meeting in Tanzania organized by a pro-trophy hunting group that it would allow the import of trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia through 2018.
Advocates for big-game hunting contend it can help preserve wildlife by generating income for poor countries that can promote conservation and improve the lives of impoverished people.
“Legal, well-regulated sport hunting as part of a sound management program can benefit certain species,” the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a statement.
U.S. wildlife officials began issuing permits for lion trophies hunted in Zambia and Zimbabwe about a month ago, ABC News confirmed today.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials said the decision was made after concluding that regulated hunting would help the survival of the endangered species in the wild.
Curiously, when Daily Mail QUOTED this ABC source, they left that later sentence out. From the same ABC article:
A U.S. Fish and Wildlife spokesperson said they found that “legal, well-regulated sport hunting” can benefit conservation by providing incentives to local communities and generating revenue that can be directed to conservation programs, saying that the programs in Zambia and Zimbabwe will enhance the survival of the species in the wild. They began issuing permits to import lion trophies on Oct. 20.
So the motivation isn’t heartless greed — quite the opposite.
Most hunters are by nature conservation-minded.
Meanwhile, Piers Morgan would have little to say about the great harm done by photo-safaris.
Dear Anti-Hunters: Your African Photo Safaris Are Destroying Wildlife & Habitat
The very American wealth and profiteering that Piers spits like a curse is the one weapon with which Poachers are being thwarted. Even our site covers that issue pretty well. Some examples below.
Private land ownership with game preserves on it… holds back habitat encroachment. Is that no longer a concern to tree-huggers? Where should the big game live, if you do not secure their land?
It also ignores how fiercely hunters have opposed poaching, and offered ideas for how to stop them from killing the animals we prize.
