It was supposed to be a fun day by the river. That went South in a hurry.

Never, ever underestimate the dangers in nature.

It’s too easy to fall into the belief that everything is under control, especially for anyone who doesn’t spend much time outdoors.

This is a VIVID reminder of just how aware of that danger we really need to be.

Raymond Cabalfin Jr., 19, jumped into the water alongside a young woman on May 11 after hiking the Lake Clementine Trail near Auburn, according to video shot by friends that was briefly posted on Facebook. While the woman popped out of the water, Cabalfin was swept away, the video showed.

What could go wrong, right? A young, athletic guy jumps in the water… just yards from shore. The river itself isn’t very wide. The girl he was with was fine.

Here he is setting up for his dive.

It turned out to be his final dive.

Raymond was swept along by the current, and never made it back to shore.

Caught on video were the last few moments anyone saw him alive.

Authorities recovered a body Monday afternoon from the American River that they believe could be a young man who went missing earlier this month after jumping into the icy waterway. Read Full story
