Some people call a spade a spade.
Kamla Devi calls it a leopard-killing instrument.
The 54-year-old Indian woman was returning to her home in Koti Bodna from the fields when a leopard attacked her without warning. Ms. Devi fought the attacking cat with what she was carrying in her hands, a spade and sickle. The widow fought the apex predator for more than an hour before it gave up and fled into the woods. Villagers found the cat dead later.
Ms. Devi is currently recovering in the hospital where she was treated for two fractures on her right hand and one on her left and deep cuts on her head and legs. She also required more than 100 stitches.
It should be noted that leopard attacks are quite frequent in rural and suburban India, a fact that many blame on that country ending sport hunting in the late 1970’s.
